What did it cost us to travel the world?

Probably one of the most frequent questions we were asked during our travels was "How much does it cost to travel the world as a family, it must be a fortune?".

Well, the reality is somewhat different.

We travelled for 10 months.

It cost us around $53,000 or 186,000 NIS.

About $5000 per month.

Significantly less than it costs us to live normally in Israel.

Our spend was probably in line with our budget before leaving, especially as we ended up spending 2 months in New Zealand which bumped up the costs, although not as much as we had anticipated.

This post is not about how to fund travelling, for everyone that is different and so for families who travel without income, then it is a significant amount to fund from savings.  We were lucky enough to have income throughout our travelling but the key point is that the costs of travelling are probably lower than most people imagine.

This figure includes absolutely everything: flights, accommodation, visas, insurance, food, activities, attractions, money we spent before leaving for vaccinations, buying rucksacks and other stuff.

We tracked our spend using this great app, TravelSpend, which allowed us to set budgets for each country and keep a handle on how much we were spending.  Some travellers find it a bit of a grind, recording every penny spent, but I'm a bit of a data junkie so actually took some sad enjoyment out of managing our finances (I'm the son of an accountant so old habits die hard!).

Our method of travel was probably a little more expensive than the average, we moved around quite a lot, didn't stay anywhere for longer than 2 weeks. It is certainly possible to travel for significantly less, for example in India where we spent on average $3250 per month, by staying in 1 or 2 places for that period, we could easily have reduced our costs to around $2000 per month.

So our costs are specific to us but they do give a fair indication of the costs of family travel.

Below is a breakdown of our spend by country.  Within each country spend I have included any entry visas and internal flights.

She Had a Dream

In 1982, the Scottish national football team released a song in the build-up to the football World Cup in Spain.

"We Have a Dream (...and dreams come true)"  was the title.

The dream was to win the World Cup.

The dream died pretty early on at the hands of the brilliant Brazilian team of Zico and Socrates.

In 1999, a 21 year-old Israeli girl called Shoshi Mizrahi was on her gap year in India and had a dream that one day she would travel the world with her future family.

In 2018, the dream came true.

Shoshi's dream, Shoshi's drive to make it happen.

Me and the kids are the fortunate ones, on this trip and in life in general.

The last 10 months have been the most amazing experience of our lives.

We've seen and done more than we could ever have imagined.

Been to places we could only have dreamed about.

Places we didn't even know existed.

Visited 9 countries.

20 flights.

Slept in 111 different hotels, guesthouses, apartments, homes, caravans, planes, tents, trains, buses, airports and even a Filipino Korean restaurant.

Been to the highest of mountains.

The whitest of beaches.

The bluest of lakes.

Sunsets in the Maldives.

Sunrises in the Himalayas.

The tranquillity of New Zealand.

The madness of India.

Snow, sun, monsoon.

Sprawling cities.

Remote villages.

Desert islands.

We've been vegans, carnivores but mostly vegetarians.

Brought in New Year 2019 and been to places which seemed more like 1919.

We've learnt so much about other cultures and a little more about each other.

We've laughed, cried, shouted, annoyed each other...all the things we usually do, just in more exotic places.

In all honesty, we're still pretty much the same people we were when we left. We just have much better stories to tell our grandchildren.

This has been more a journey of geographical, rather than emotional, discovery. That's not to say it hasn't been hugely emotional, just that we haven't really discovered a 'new' us.  We knew who we were before we left, we knew we wanted adventure, excitement, a different way of life.  This journey has only reinforced that belief. Our challenge now is how we change our lives long-term for the better. Less of the day-to-day routine and stresses, more of the freedom, relaxation and enjoyment that this year has brought.

We'd love to continue travelling but for now, we're going back home.

Next week, it'll be all over.

The thought of going back to Israel is terrifying.

The thought of the kids going back to school is somewhat more appealing.

Roll on the 1st September.

Incredible India

For many years, the Indian Tourist Board in the UK ran an advertising campaign under the strap-line 'Incredible India'.

After spending the last 2 months here, only scratching the surface of this sprawling, diverse country, 'incredible' seems the perfect description of everything good and bad about this place.

When we first arrived, we weren't sure if we would last 2 months but as the days and weeks passed, we slipped deeper into 'Indian Mode' and now we just don't want to leave. India is definitely an acquired taste and we are hungry for more.

It's dirty, noisy, smelly, sweaty and I can't pretend to enjoy all of those added 'benefits' but the whole experience is definitely one that we have enjoyed.

There is so much more to experience here, so much more to explore, so much more to see, touch and smell, so much more to eat.

India, we'll be back...
